Inclusion in Worship
What is an Inclusion Representative?
Every faith community is unique. The work of the volunteer
Inclusion Representative will vary with the needs of the parish. The following
suggestions will give you an idea of how to begin.
- Form a well-rounded Inclusion Committee approved by the religious leader and governing council to oversee an inclusion initiative in your house of worship.
- Survey the needs of your worshipers and plan how to accommodate their needs.
- Coordinate annual Inclusion Awareness Day activities to showcase how your congregation welcomes worshipers with disabilities every day of the year. Planning materials and the date will be sent directly to Inclusion Representatives.
- Submit an entry in the Pathways Awareness Foundation Open Hearts Awards program to share your inclusion progress and to compete for grant money to be used to further inclusion efforts in your faith community. Flyers will be sent directly to Inclusion Representatives.
- Promote the use of the Different Gifts, But the Same Spirit lesson plans in your religious school and religious education program. Call 1-800-955-2445 for a free copy of the plans.
- Promote the Junior Open Hearts Awards program for children in your faith community. Flyers will be sent directly to Inclusion Representatives.
- Network with other Inclusion Representatives.
- Personally invite persons with disabilities to participate in worship, ministries, organizations and events.
- Be a voice for inclusion in all aspects of faith life.
