Inclusion Sunday: October 14, 2001

 

Cardinal Francis George declared October 14, 2001 Inclusion Sunday, a day for parishes in the Archdiocese of Chicago to showcase the many ways they welcome parishioners with disabilities every day of the year. Jenny Beese, Inclusion Representative from St. AlexanderÆs parish in Palos Heights, met with her parishÆs inclusion committee several times to plan activities for Inclusion Sunday. ôThis is the third year that we have participated in Inclusion Sunday. Our goal this year is to touch each member of our community through special

liturgical celebrations so that inclusion will permeate the very fabric of our parish.ö

Materials designed to assist parishes to plan for Inclusion Sunday were sent to pastors and Parish Inclusion Representatives in August. By popular demand, these materials are also available online.

Open Hearts Round Table of Advisors Meets with Mary Jane Owen
Members of the Open Hearts Round Table of Advisors met on July 17, 2001. Special guest at the meeting was Mary Jane Owen, Director of the National Catholic Office for Persons with Disabilities, Washington, D.C. Established in 1982, the mission of the office is to implement the Pastoral Statement of the U.S. Catholic Bishops on Persons with Disabilities. Mary Jane shared her expertise with the members of the Open Hearts Round Table of Advisors. ôI am very pleased with the work that Pathways Awareness Foundation is doing in partnership with the Archdiocese of Chicago to further the inclusion of persons with disabilities in all facets of parish life. I am excited about the æOpen Hearts, Open Minds, 

Open DoorsÆ project and the five-year inclusion initiative here in Chicago.ö
